Getting ready to mail the 5 copies of White Gloves and Collards that I offered in a Goodreads giveaway. 728 people entered and more than 300 added my book to their "to read" list! If you're not familiar with goodreads.com, check it out. It's a wonderful resource for book enthusiasts.
Carroll Lassiter, an Edenton native and the artist whose painting is on the cover of White Gloves and Collards, was interviewed on a UNC-TV program about Chapel Hill area artists. (Her interview is at the beginning of the program.) Enjoyed two book-related events this week. Did an Author Talk on Tuesday night at the beautiful Fallbrook Public Library. Then on Wednesday, I read from White Gloves and Collards at a UNC alumni "salon" led by English and Comparative Literature professor, Jane Danielewicz. Fun to be around a bunch of smart Tarheels!
After interviewing me last Saturday for her 550 KFYI radio program, "In the Kitchen with Jan," Jan d'Atri wrote about White Gloves and Collards recipes (including Sock-it-to-me Poundcake) in her weekly Scottsdale Republic column.
It was such an honor to talk about my memoir Wednesday night at the Pt. Loma Library's annual Author Series. The Friends of the Library decorated the refreshment table with actual white gloves and collards and awarded collards and other greens as door prizes. It was loads of fun!
I enjoyed a discussion of White Gloves and Collards last night at a book club gathering in Del Mar. Our stimulating conversation about race, class, and coming of age in the South was enhanced by delicious corn pudding, collard greens, and Sock-it-to-me pound cake prepared by hostess Arline Paa.
On Tuesday morning, I did an interview on "San Diego Living" with Marc Bailey. It was fun to see what goes on behind the scenes in a TV studio! You can watch the short, five-minute segment below. Looking forward to a book-signing this Sunday from 12 to 2 at Warwick's, an independent bookstore in La Jolla, CA. If you're in the area, I hope you'll stop by!
I had a great time last night at the 2014 San Diego Book Awards ceremony where White Gloves and Collards was a finalist in the category of memoir.
